I'm probably not in the target audience, because when the critics gush so much it must be looking at the artsy nature of the movie, not its entertainment value. The bouncy, hand-held camera work nauseated my wife. She had to leave with a half hour left, which was fine by me because I was ready to leave a half hour before that due to boredom! Nothing happens in the first 70% of the movie. I can't speak for the rest.

The Beast of Sourthern Wild offers a parable about the survivors-ship in A Katrina like disaster from the eyes of child. Living in the wild of submerged back water bayou, this child shares her experiences of love, loss and strength. A beautiful and sad film, powerful in story and cinematography.

Beasts of the Southern Wilds

This is not a movie for kids, despite it's rating and trailer. My 13 and 11 year olds were upset and confused. The movie romanticized poverty and ignorance. Its treatment of environmental issues was foolishly simplistic. We found it relentlessly depressing. The choice of the choppy, hand-held camera work made the cinematography distracting. Maybe it is supposed to feel more gritty and real, but the movie didn't need any help there. The nausea-inducing filming did nothing to enhance to our experience of the movie.

I've seen Beasts of the Southern Wild twice and looking forward to seeing it AGAIN! The actors were great and the script was excellent. I laughed and cried. A good "get away" film.

Unique and ambitious, but kind of grim

This movie is being described as being life-affirming. I think that it's more of a study of gut-wrenching , intractable poverty--and a resilient child. The little girl should, and will, be nominated for many acting awards. I didn't exactly enjoy the movie--mostly, it isn't much fun--but, I was impressed by it.
