Beautiful, poignant, and deep. It dares you to rethink the meaning of dignity, freedom and love. A movie that will stay with you long after you leave the theater.

Unadorned indie masterpiece

Strong point is subtext almost totally unadorned, even by words. Using the landscape, a bit of dreams, and terrific editing, every frame is rich in story and palpable truth. Watching, one never doubts that the father loves his child. But does she understand? Given the opportunity to escape what seems like a horrific life, she carefully saves alligator nuggets from her only meal in days and runs back through the swampland to feed her dying father. Really, a beautiful film.

AN EXPERIENCE NEVER TO BE DUPLICATED. A CHARACTER, "HUSHPUPPY", NEVER TO BE REPLICATED!

Achingly poignant, mythically powerful film, told from the perspective of six-year-old "Hushpuppy" (Quvenzhanem Wallis, a forceful sprite with a gift from the gods); living in the disastrously destitute Louisiana bayou; alone, she resides in a shack, next door to her abusive, alcoholic, terminally ill father, "Wink" (brilliant portrayal by Dwight Henry) in an island of muck, detritus, prehistoric, called "The Bathtub" a euphemism for an ark, comparable to "Noah’s"; when the deluge strikes, only the few, the "chosen" and their animals survive. This is a community rarely focused upon (herein lies the genius and prescience of Benh Zeitlin, Lucy Alibar; based on the stage play she wrote, "Juicy and Delicious"); comfortable in their inebriated squalor, entitled in their refusal to move from their doomed environment, weirdly, they demand and earn our respect... Beast of the Southern Wild

A pretty phenomenal story and bit of story telling. It is amazing that the two main characters were new actors/actresses since they played great roles and the need to develop more independent films similar to this. In this age of pure garbage from an entertainment perspective or minimal creativity and imagination it is great to see that there are still some master story tellers and creative people out there making great movies. All kudos has to go to the director and producer of this movie for taking such a bold step in the release of a great movie focusing on such an area with unlimited cultural richness. This is a movie that will not be watched by most Americans that do not want to explore new adventures and love to keep their heads in the sand of comfortability without challenging themselves. For those limited in imagination and creativity...Stay comfortable and boring my friends!!! For those that want to see, taste and smell everything life has to offer keep making new movies.

Pointless rubbish...LITERALLY!

This is a critic's movie. If you regularly agree with the critics and like 'way out there, but not much there' movies, then this pointless indulgence into filth, alcoholism, and fantasy will delight you and leave you satiated for some time. The little girl was very good, and was the only reason I found to stay till the end.
