I really enjoyed this movie. I 'm not sure how I'd describe it. Moving, funny, parts were disturbing. But it did leave me with a good feeling in the end.

Given all the Oscar buzz, I finally dragged myself to see this movie, and I'm glad I did. The movie is set in a fictional shanty town in an island off New Orleans, and follows the relationship between an ailing single dad and his young daughter. The dad practices self-reliance and tries to instill that through tough-love parenting to his daughter amid a catastrophic flood caused by melting of global ice caps. It is a dreamy movie where the plot flow doesn't matter as much as the characters and the cinematography. The movie would be mesmerizing if it had developed more the role of the fictional beasts called Aurochs that were released from melting ice, but they really don't play a role until the very end of the movie. This is a movie for adults and thinking teens, and not for teens that want action rather than acting. Even though I am leery of movies that are "must go" from critics, I was pleasantly surprised by how a movie with a thin plot can nevertheless be very powerful.

I had wanted to see this movie since I read an excellent review before its national release. It did not disappoint. The young actree (and star) was absolutely captivating and gave an Oscar-worthy performance.
It is NOT for children although there are a few children featured.
Do go see it!

A small girl tries to make sense of her world, a poverty stricken island off the coast of Louisiana, when she must deal with disaster, sickness, ignorance, squalor and despair. The performances are terrific and the photography is marvelous, but the story itself can be depressing.

This film is captivating. You keep wanting to know what's going to happen next, but are afraid to see the fruition of the most current theme.
The performances are heart-stopping, the circumstances heart-wrenching, yet there is love, loyalty
bravery, fantastic fantasy, and truth to a promise. Make sure you experience it!
