Disappointing

I was hoping for more. This movie started out as a direct-to-video cheapie and was hastily repurposed into a "theatrical" project in the wake of the tragic shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. The points the film tries to make are valid but it communicates them ineffectively. Putting Ted Nugent onscreen as a Second Amendment spokesman was a poor choice - not only does he come with too much baggage but his statement that "I have guns, YOU can't have them, I have several of them on me now, AND THEY'RE LOADED" reads as the kind of nutty threat the anti-gun crowd will eat up. The movie also paints law enforcement and the military as either incompetent, corrupt or out of control, which makes no sense since police and the military are staunch Second Amendment supporters. Ice-T may be a passable actor but he is NOT a narrator, and his discomfort with having to voice narration that does not fit his speaking style or persona was palpable. Overall: very disappointing.

An excellent synopsis of Second Amendment History

History buffs, law nerds, civil rights activists, and gun enthusiasts will love this movie. As an enthusiast of history and constitutional law, I found this to be a fascinating look into the roots of the Second Amendment, and the very reasons we continue to have it. What we see on news programs tends to leave us with very little information, and this movie takes a very careful look at the Second Amendment in context of several aspects, among them the civil rights movement, violence prevention, a detailed (rather than broad) look at statistics of gun violence, and the number of intriguing profiles of gun owners. With Ice T narrating, it shifts the discussion away from hackneyed debate the Second Amendment rights being exclusively a problem which white males worry about. If you are a gun owner, you should definitely see it. If you are interesting in our country's history, civil rights, or legal arguments, you should see it.

Well Done Documentary

This is a well-researched review of the current issues about guns. Both sides of the issue, both pro and con, are given as well as a lot of historical information. You are presented with facts, not hysterics, from criminologists, psychiatrists, historians, etc. Kudos to all involved in making this movie.

This was a well put together and balanced documentary on the history of the 2nd amendment, an the racial underpinnings of it's infringement over the past 70 years. A must see for any US History fan.
