    Hard Truths Beautifully Told

This is my third Haneke film and by far my favorite. Cinematically, it's perfect. Narrative stripped down to its emotional core. No waste, nothing extraneous, although there are several wonderous moments of relief/ escape-- when the camera scans the content of several bucolic canvases on their walls, for example-- from the drama taking place in Anne and George's apartment. At the same time, I was struck by the film's insights into some of the most difficult emotional experiences we face. I felt I gained a new understanding of my late parents' end-of-life difficulties and decisions. On that level, this is a movie everyone should see, not just cinephiles or foreign film buffs.

    Not for the faint-hearted

This is not, alas, "An Old Man and an Old Woman", though a picture of Jean-Louis in his earlier role does show up in this movie but, overall, this was an extremely slow and depressing movie, though with some quirky editing twists that leave you wondering just when you're seeing the couple... It's in the 'I'm glad I saw it (the acting IS wonderful), but can't really recommend it' category...

the worst most plodding movie since Barry Lyndon

    by juliang

they have to tell adults with any life experience with elderly parents what happens.
as though this were revelatory? and snotty for sure
The decaying woman was a pianist and instructor, and her husband was something of equal stature. They lived in a fine apartment in Paris. She had a stroke and one side of her body was paralyzed. The husband had to do everything, as minuate as her incontinence in bed, as he discovered when he woke up in the am and had to clean up, as they showed...what startling and eye opening revelations for the so-called intellectuals who are essentially ninnies. A main point of the story was don't make promises to the beloved never to put her or him in a hospital or home, because the afflicted one, when the time comes, will be unable to perceive most anything, and will be an incredible 24/7 burden...my gosh. i had no idea.
The camera stayed on shots interminably at times. Baaad theatah (SNL-Leonard pinth Garnell) for the pseudointellects and their lemmings
