I watch a lot of Scorsese movies, so perhaps that's why I had some trouble with David O. Russell's American Hustle. Russell takes the movie to the same places Scorsese takes his movies and they both pepper their films with great music to drive home the scene. Scorsese's scene in Goodfellas where he uses Eric Clapton's Layla, really enhances the tension. But in American Hustle, the music doesn't seem to give the scenes any oomph. The characters seem to fall short too. I felt like these were characters I'd seen before played by different actors. Christian Bale was unlikeable, which was the point, I mean I really hated his character and seeing him like that, but it was effective. Jeremy Renner was so-so and Bradley Cooper was over the top but not outstanding by any means. Jennifer Lawrence did a great job - not once did I think of her as Katniss. Amy Adams does a spectacular job. She gave a surprising performance. Still despite my issues, I still think it's a great movie.

I enjoyed it better than my husband, but I think it was masterfully done. Costuming/hair, etc. was such a throw-back to the 70's. Left me wondering how much of the story was actually true, but I liked it and would see it again. =)

Good acting but I thought the movie was very slow and very boring. Other people leaving the theater were grumbling that it wasn't good. Had I known it was going to be a so-so movie, I would have waited for it to be on HBO or Netflix.

Best part of this movie was the acting by the four main roles...deserved Oscar nominations to each of them. Jeremy Renner was fantastic, as well.
Don't go to this movie if you are expecting a fast paced, action driven, or typical mob movie. It does not fall into any of those categories. What it has is a semi redundant plot line that took time to develop and had it not been for the acting, I could've fallen asleep.
That being said, this movie is for those of you who enjoy top notch acting, intriguing characters, and a simple storyline that will push you to both cheer for and feel sorry for a host of morally bankrupt individuals.

What a movie. The cast is impeccable and each actor gave a spectacular performance. Kudos to the director. I love character depth and development. This has it in spades. It's amazing what happens when you put together all the pieces. I'm not a fan of the Hollywood movie mill churning out garbage week after week. But once in awhile, you get true art and entertainment. American Hustle is all that.
