I watch a lot of Scorsese movies, so perhaps that's why I had some trouble with David O. Russell's American Hustle. Russell takes the movie to the same places Scorsese takes his movies and they both pepper their films with great music to drive home the scene. Scorsese's scene in Goodfellas where he uses Eric Clapton's Layla, really enhances the tension. But in American Hustle, the music doesn't seem to give the scenes any oomph. The characters seem to fall short too. I felt like these were characters I'd seen before played by different actors. Christian Bale was unlikeable, which was the point, I mean I really hated his character and seeing him like that, but it was effective. Jeremy Renner was so-so and Bradley Cooper was over the top but not outstanding by any means. Jennifer Lawrence did a great job - not once did I think of her as Katniss. Amy Adams does a spectacular job. She gave a surprising performance. Still despite my issues, I still think it's a great movie.

Best part of this movie was the acting by the four main roles...deserved Oscar nominations to each of them. Jeremy Renner was fantastic, as well.
Don't go to this movie if you are expecting a fast paced, action driven, or typical mob movie. It does not fall into any of those categories. What it has is a semi redundant plot line that took time to develop and had it not been for the acting, I could've fallen asleep.
That being said, this movie is for those of you who enjoy top notch acting, intriguing characters, and a simple storyline that will push you to both cheer for and feel sorry for a host of morally bankrupt individuals.

I enjoyed it better than my husband, but I think it was masterfully done. Costuming/hair, etc. was such a throw-back to the 70's. Left me wondering how much of the story was actually true, but I liked it and would see it again. =)

Good acting but I thought the movie was very slow and very boring. Other people leaving the theater were grumbling that it wasn't good. Had I known it was going to be a so-so movie, I would have waited for it to be on HBO or Netflix.

I was very disappointed in this movie. It's 2 hours that I won't get back. I was considering leaving, but the lovely recliner chairs in the theatre made it hard to leave without disturbing other guests. I read all the rave reviews so was expecting an entertaining and intelligent movie.
It was long and slow and boring. It was not funny. The script was poor. It dragged on and on. There was a slight twist at the end, but not well written. It could have been written so much better.
It could have been made into a one hour show. The actors were very good, and their characters were interesting and I enjoyed the 70's clothing and decor. But the script was terrible. Have seen better hustler movies with a twist than American Hustle.
Love Christain Bale - he is fabulous at changing his body to match the role.
It was a waste of $55 myself, my husband and my 2 teenagers.
Should have seen the Walter Mitty movie instead. Can't wait to see Philomenia.
