I watch a lot of Scorsese movies, so perhaps that's why I had some trouble with David O. Russell's American Hustle. Russell takes the movie to the same places Scorsese takes his movies and they both pepper their films with great music to drive home the scene. Scorsese's scene in Goodfellas where he uses Eric Clapton's Layla, really enhances the tension. But in American Hustle, the music doesn't seem to give the scenes any oomph. The characters seem to fall short too. I felt like these were characters I'd seen before played by different actors. Christian Bale was unlikeable, which was the point, I mean I really hated his character and seeing him like that, but it was effective. Jeremy Renner was so-so and Bradley Cooper was over the top but not outstanding by any means. Jennifer Lawrence did a great job - not once did I think of her as Katniss. Amy Adams does a spectacular job. She gave a surprising performance. Still despite my issues, I still think it's a great movie.

This movie is a bust. Tired story line, taken from a classic made over 30 years ago.
Total bore. The only thing that was interesting was Amy Adams showing her cleavage all through the movie, and that wasn't very eye appealing at all.
Save your money.

The actors make this movie happen. All were stellar in their roles. Story topic isn't new. What was new and great was how they approached and wrote the screenplay. This could have been a predictable played out story but it was executed in character development not gratuitous violence. In fact there was virtually no violence in this film which could have been an easy crutch. Well done!

I love these con-game movies. I love that we know what's going on, but we don't know what's going on. Someone is always getting conned or hustled and the acting is very good. For me, Jennifer Lawrence and Christian Bale are the standouts. The rest of the cast is also very good and the movie is a good solid ride.
One thing I didn't really buy was the backstory with Cooper's character. It seemed a bit 'shoved in' to the plot. I feel like they could have let us into that world with a few extra establishing scenes just to make it feel a little more credible.
I was expecting the cinematography and the sets to be a bit more styled, but I don't think it quite got there for me. It still felt a touch too modern for me. Other people may think differently about it, but for me there was something missing—It didn't take away from the story, however.

Good story - well directed
and the acting was all around phenomenal - I would not be surprised if this gets all the nominations and a few wins at the oscars.
Also louis ck stole the show, he didn't have a huge part but the scenes he was in were my favorite.
There haven't been many movies to be excited by in the past few months until recently, and this movie is at the top of that list - definitely worth seeing!
