Don't be taken in by this film's Con!!

This is the only movie I've walked out on in 15 years (with 25 minutes remaining.) Like it's baseless plot, "American Hustle" was an empty promise. It took more than 30 minutes for anything to happen to move the story forward and even that was weak, at best. Deeply unlikable characters and not one moment of redemption. The acting was good, but who cares if the actors are able to bring the characters to life in a pointless existence where nothing interesting happens and there is no one to root for? Wardrobe and set design deserve an award (except for the awful, obvious spray tan; distracting throughout....sheesh, c'mon, makeup dept. you can do better than that!) But the solid acting is certainly not compelling enough to engage an audience for 2+ hours. This is a poor forgery of "Goodfellas," which was a masterfully done version of a 70's under-world movie. Watch it again if you crave the era, but AVOID "American Hustle" or you'll be made a patsy like I was. >.This is the only movie I've walked out on in 15 years (with 25 minutes remaining.) It didn't work for me

I just couldn't get into this movie...it had it's moments, but basically it didn't hold me, entertainment, or interest me. No likeable characters, weird and interesting, but I didn't connect or have any feeling for any of them. I think the movie tried to be a Quentin Tarentino or Coen Brothers type movie, but they didn't pull it off...maybe it's just me...whatever.

Disappointed

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie but was very disappointed. The characters were overblown stereotypes, even cartoonish in a way. Most of the movie was very slow moving and even though it was about a huge scam it was not very suspenseful. I'm not sure if this was a comedy or drama; it didn't succeed at either.

It was a yawn

The story was not strong, the hustle was not intricate and convincing and the editing made it slow moving. The acting was good, but Justin Bateman is the only one who had a challenging part. I enjoy Jennifer Lawrence, but she over acted in this role. Take her acting in Silver Lining and double it. Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper are consistently good, but their parts were nothing extraordinary. All in all, I was disappointed after hearing it garnered 6 Globe noms. Hopefully it stays out of the Oscar race.

American Hustle - a review from beautiful downtown Short Pump Cinema

Individually, the actors were superb...especially Jennifer Lawrence. However, I kept wanting the movie to pick up the pace and get to the real "hustle" that took place at the end. Let's just say you were to compare this movie to the classic "The Sting" with Paul Newman and Robert Redford...see what I mean, there is no comparison. My wife was so bored she was ready to leave. I stayed somewhat interested mainly due to the soundtrack and to see where they would take the ending. Unfortunately, the story was just not that interesting in the way it was told.
