This film provides a look at the complexities of education in a poor, multicultural school in Paris--an honest and compelling picture. The difficulties of communicating across cultures make for a poignant examination of the relations among 14-year-old students, and the sense of their own margininalization that the students have already absorbed makes for strain between them and their well-meaning (if sometimes obtuse) teacher. Then there are the universal pains and delights of adolescence and the frustrations and excitements of secondary education, where talent and intelligence and discipline and sex appeal are all being discovered. This film is a must for anyone interested in teaching and in how young people view their teachers and classmates
