This was my first hearing, so getting a fix on the music was difficult but it seemed typical Donizetti. Queen Eliabeth had a great voice but apparently as directed be very masculine in movement. Maria (DiDonato) had a great voice flawed by vibrato on any long high note. The second act belonged to her, and she provided a very rare emotional impact. The men were all very good. In the second and final act, DiDonato dominated over the music, but she was superb. A little English history helps. Washington Concert Opera will perform this opera this spring. Certainly, we will go.
