Verdi is considered an operatic Genius, and the Met production of Otello was very well done. I am not a big fan of opera in general, but Otello has an interesting and exciting plot and is pretty true to Shakespeare's original play. The performers were phenomenal, especially Renee Fleming as Desdemona. I felt that some of the scenes were rather sappy and sentimental, such as the end of Act I when Otello and Desdemona profess their love for one another. Contrarily, there were many humorous moments, mainly led by the villainous Iago, such as in the opening scene when he sets up Cassio to lose his position as Captain. The most beautiful moment in the opera is the final scene in which Desdemona sings the prayer, Ave Maria, before Otello comes in to end her life.
