The Met's Enchanted Island opera was, well -- enchanting. The entire stage production team and performing cast did a marvelous job. So why am I panning the Live in HD performance?

Sound. Or rather, the lack thereof. Varying in irregular frequency from three seconds to six minutes throughout the opera, the audio transmission would simply drop out of existence for a half second or so.

Unlike all previous Met HD performances I've attended, this type of unplanned sound interruption is bad enough during spoken conversation. Happening continuously over four hours of operatic music, it's intolerable.

Isn't it amazing that the brief absence of something we take for granted (decent audio for a High Def transmission) can become so grating as to totally distract one from all the good parts?
