This was not a film, but a live, high-definition broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York. This is our second HD opera - we enjoyed the Magic Flute immensely last year - and was also both entertaining and educational. The music, costumes, dancing and tragic love story were all extremely entertaining. The education came from the behind the scenes interviews by Renee Fleming, as well as the camera work, which revealed the characters and aspects of the production that one only gets during these live, HD broadcasts. My only complaint is that the sponsors of the event were credited over and over and over again, followed by a lengthy commercial for Bloomberg's financial information network, and then Renee made yet another appeal for contributions over and above the $20 ticket price. The shameless commercialism and unnecessary plea for support distracted from an otherwise wonderful experience.
