This Vitagraph programmer suffers from an exceptionally poor script. Allen Spargo (Alfred Whitman) is a young mining engineer headed West to make his fortune. Theresa Kane (Nell Shipman) promises to marry him when he returns. But Theresa's mother (Hattie Burkirk) pushes the scholarly Lemuel Antree (Juan de la Cruse) on her. Allen is injured on the job, and while he is recovering, Kate Leonard (Patricia Palmer), a girl at the camp, takes care of him. She jealously intercepts all the letters to and from Theresa. Finally, she writes Theresa that Allen is dead, and Theresa agrees to marry Antree. Allen, meanwhile, has recovered, and, since he hasn't heard from his fiancée, heads home. He finds Theresa and Antree married. Antree promises that he won't stand in their way and proves his point by taking them on a canoe across the lake -- he capsizes the canoe and conveniently drowns, leaving the couple free to be together. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
