Not bad, not great - Possible Spoiler Alert

As Science Fiction movies go, this one is a bit of a light weight. It is a good vehicle to let Will Smith's son take a lead role, but the script is lacking in all the elements you really want in a great movie. While the special effects are very good, the script just does not allow the actors to convey the intent of the movie: Estranged father and son go on an adventure, and son has to undertake a hero's quest against great odds to save himself and his father. At the end the son overcomes his flaw and through the process he and his father reunite. Well, while the movie goes in that direction, neither character is particularly likable, due mostly to the shallowness of the script. Also, it begs the question, wait, if they have all that technology, where are the big guns? So the movie seems a bit contrived to support the reason for the hero's flaw rather than getting there in a different way.

Not as bad as I expected

This is not a good movie. The dialogue is stiff, and often painful, and for some reason, Will Smith and his son speak in bizarre, unnecessary accents. But, the sets and the vision of an Earth which is a jungle, full of danger, were interesting, and I found the movie more watchable than I expected.

After Earth

Although it is only June, this is the sure winner for worst movie of the year. a thousand years in the future a space ship returns to an abandoned earth and crashes in what looks like the Sequoia National Park. Only survivors, a stern Will Smith and his son Jaden. Will spends most of the movie injured and strapped into a barcalounger in the ruins of a ship made of toilet paper and saran wrap. The ship has split in two and Jaden must find a beacon in the "piece of tail " of the ship. He spends hours running through a moss covered forest avoiding badly computer generated baboons and a massive boll weevil. A major piece of crap.

Will needs to stick to comedy. This was clearly a vehicle to introduce his son to the moviegoer's but really fell flat. I think the audience laughed once- near the end. For sci-fi it was not very realistic. I mean one of the crash sites from their ship looked like it was draped in toilet paper! If you want your money's worth go see Star Trek instead.

The accents of the characters killed it some. But the scenes, the creatures to hunt humans was very good. The story line was is where were are headed in the destruction of Earth. Loved the action.
