    Horrific True Crime Story

Director Zev Berman has described "Borderland" as a horrific true crime story -- exactly right. The story is inspired by the 1989 human-sacrifice cult murders in the area around Matamoros, Mexico that were solved when American and Mexican authorities searched for American college student Mark Kilroy, one of the cult's last victims. Yes, there is gore and violence -- the film opens with the torture murder of a Mexican policeman by cult members, and the treatment of kidnapped Phil and his friend Henry is very rough -- but always smart and purposeful. This isn't "torture porn." Director Berman (who also co-wrote the script) explores motivations -- what would you do to try to save a friend? Would you risk your own life in hope (and not certainty) of succeeding? And what gets someone into this kind of intense and, to say the least, "alternative" mode of belief? Great performance by Sean Astin and others! Saw it twice -- I'd love to see it again! Very well made, haunting film!

    Solid Story, Decent Acting

Due to the location & timing of this film, I missed the first 30 minutes, but picked it up right when one of the three former marines was first kidnapped, so I don't believe I missed much. The dark-haired Mexican girl actress was scorching HOT. The primary actors were OK. Like others, the fact this story was based on fact made it better. The gory death scenes were very believable and indeed horrific. Lots of chop-em up action! This movie used the end result of gory acts very nicely as scare tactics. In other words, you don't have to see all the acts of murder to be scary. The ending was satisfying, and the follow-up epilogue was much appreciated to wrap-up the story line. Overall, I'd rank this film just behind the Deaths of Ian Stone in the Horrorfest, with Tooth and Nail in third and Crazy Eights a distant 4th. I plan to see at least one of the other four films this week, and will post my reviews of them at that time.
