Jack McCoy's documentary A Deeper Shade of Blue examines the history of surfing as well as the technology that goes into constructing the perfect board. In order to give the film structure, McCoy tells the history of the sport by profiling a pair of very different women who helped make it a cultural mainstay. He serves up biographies of Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani, who first brought the activity's mass exposure in the 1800s, and Califorinian Kathy Kohner whose love of the waves helped make her the role model for the popular fictional character Gidget. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
