Billy Wilder's ACE IN THE HOLE (aka THE BIG CARNIVAL) is a simmering, hard-edged account of what happens when the media gets involved with a nationally exposed human interest story and all the calamity it can instigate. Kirk Douglas is the down-on-his-luck NYC newsman ostracized to New Mexico to a third rate paper. When he inadvertently comes across a scoop of a man trapped in an old Indian ruin, he shoots into action to exploit it to inevitably get his name back on a paper back east. Unflinching in his use of the location, Wilder constructs a very tight, taut morality tale that is amazingly still relevant today. I rarely seen gem that is worth a viewing...
