The Detroit based MC5 released Kick Out the Jams in 1968. The Stooges, also Detroit based, released their first album in 1969. So how is it that Death invented punk in 1975? I like the music and I'm glad I saw the documentary but the claim that Death was "punk before was punk' is simply not true.
The film spends too much time on the early death of guitarist David Hackney. There are simply too many scenes of people crying and too little time devoted to the band's music. Detroit in the 70s was an amazing mix is social, political, racial, and cultural forces. Sadly the film gives us very little of that.
