I'm not at all familiar with the novel, but immediately after watching the premiere of this film, I
went back and watched the original (1987) and I must say that both films are evenly bad. The 1987 film had a better story line and was more straight forward with each scene. The 2014 film is very secretive and lazy. Instead of having scenes to back up the story, they basically had the characters explaining everything rather than showing it. For example, the arsenic treats. In the 1987 film, they show the mother sprinkling the arsonic filled sugar over the treats, versus the 2014 film where the grandmother hints, "I wouldn't eat the treats, they're bad for your health." The ending to the 2014 film was absolutely terrible. Only a person who has read the novel may be able to answer the unanswered questions, such as what happened to the mother? Is there a reason to why the grandmother's clostraphobic? How did the father die? etc. Lastly, the incest scenes really made this film disturbing.
Honestly, before I even streamed the movie, I didn't really expect much. I knew it would be the
usual, college guy wants a girl, a party is thrown, you see a few boobs, etc. It's nothing more than a typical college movie. I chuckled a few times, but that's about it.
I was on Netflix and randomly selected this movie and I was very pleased. This movie is excellent
and is a must see.
