Well, first of all I liked the movie. My wife and daughter liked it a lot more than me, so maybe I'm over analyzing everything. But I know when I left the theater after seeing Up, or Wall-ee, or Toy Story, I was left with a lot of themes to think about. That's what I expect when I see a Pixar movie. But here, we have the Disney-young-and-fiery-female-lead (think Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel, Mulan, Pocahontas) model trying to break free of parental authority and be the free spirit they are meant to be. So we have a pedestrian, road-worn script and direction stuffed into the gorgeous palette of Pixar animation and setting. The voice talents were fine. I'm a fan of Kelly Macdonald, and could listen to her read the telephone book. But I didn't leave the theater in wonder, like I usually do after seeing a Pixar movie. I liked the movie for what it was, and I truly appreciate the beautiful job on the animation. But I found the story lacking. ...(read more)

I'm a big Charlize Theron fan, so that was my main reason for going. Plus, I'm a sucker for fairytales, and the writers, director and actors did a great job of adapting the story for today's audience. The writers respected the foundation of the original German fairytale, but instead of the huntsman returning to the palace with the organs of a boar rather than those those of Snow White's, he becomes her protector. And we have what has become Hollywood's hackneyed desire to turn every literary character into a hero or heroine with a gun, sword or ninja training, as Snow White leads an assault on the evil queen and her evil army. It was filmed beautifully, especially when Snow White, the Huntsman and the dwarves hid out in the land of fairies. The acting was good, and although I've never been a Stewart fan because of her one-note acting, I thought she showed some growth as an actor. ...(read more)
