The production was absolutely gorgeous! "the Machine" was truly amazing and provided a wonderful
set in a most inventive way. All of the costumes were beautifully done and had the look of a science fantasy movie rather than a grand opera. Of course, the music was glorious and the singers were supreme. It was well worth seeing, even if one is not a Wagner fan.
Just as Caruso said, all one needs for Il Trovatore is four of the greatest singers in the world
and this production came pretty close. All four principals were fabulous and the orchestration terrific. The only flaw was the overly noisy "anvils" in the Anvil Chorus, but I can't wait to see it again!
My opera group was very pleasantly surprised with an elegant and colorful mounting of an early
opera. We were also delighted to hear that Susan Graham and Maestro Domingo were able to perform beautifully with such terrible upper respiratory distress. They are true professionals, as are the other members of the Met cast.
