The overall impression was that having the actors wear earpieces, so they could hear the music while they sang, was a mistake. They could "act" that way, but it sometimes meant *talking* where they should have been singing. They could emote, but the songs had plenty of emotion that was lost in the acting. The handheld camera work was distracting. Some of the singing was good, Anne Hathaway, of course. Amanda Seyfried's Cosette stood out. I wasn't fond of Jackman -- as he said in an interview, the part requires a 2 1/2 octave range. He doesn't have it. The character of Marius and the other leaders of the rebellion had strong voices -- in fact, all the rebels sang well. A huge pleasant surprise was Russell Crowe. Those who say he couldn't sing must have watched a different movie. The javert role is difficult -- the audience hates him for the entire film and there are hardly any songs for him.
