Jolie's performance is good, but not oscar worthy. The film itself is long, over-acted and
heavy-handed. There's no sublety or nuance. There's some violence that seems exploitave and cheap. I respect Eastwood, but I think a more gifted filmaker could make more emotional impact and not resort to cheap shots. There's excrutiating violence to children that's feels cheap and sleazy, insane asylum scenes ala Snake Pit, and a brutal hanging that made me giggle by the time it happened. There's a lot of missed opportunites. Too bad. It's a great story. What hapened to the guy that directed Mystic River?
