This production of "Le Comte Ory" is wonderful and I enjoyed it very much. I had seen and heard
Juan Diego Florez sing the title role in a production at Pesaro's Rossini Festival some years ago, a production that, due to stupid decisions by the director and designers, made no sense whatsoever. This Met production is entirely the opposite: its delightful scenery, lighting, and costumes advanced the plot and characters rather than holding them back. Moreover, the director knew how to move and group the main characters, chorus members, and supernumeraries to the best effect, thus creating a staging that seemed natural (within opera's fantastical range). All of the singers were exceptional, but particular praise goes to the baritone who sang the patter song in the second act.
I want particularly to thank The Metropolitan Opera and Fandango and my nearly-local movie theatre for bringing high-level opera productions to the entire United States.
There's really no point in reviewing this performance, because it is a one-time event, but I do
want to say that the Met's HD performances are wonderful and deserve to be attended. The movie theatres that are hosting these events also deserve a lot of credit. Thank you, Metropolitan Opera; thank you, movie theatre managers!
I've never cared much for John Adams' music, lumping him in with other modern composers whose music
I consider monotonous, repetitive, and thus b-o-r-i-n-g. This opera really changed my mind--at least about this opera. I'm very glad that I went. And I keep thanking Fandango and its member theatres for bringing these wonderful Met broadcasts to those of us out here in the square atates.
