Other than showcasing Peter Gelb’s narcissistic ego, I thought the real star of the film was
Deborah Voigt. How dare he slight those stage crews and, especially, the hard work of his predecessor, Joe Volpe! Secondarily, it gave a pretty decent view, although shortened, of the evolution of The Machine, from idea to reality. What it doesn't portray, although mentioned in passing by a devoted Ring cycle couple, is that the grandeur of the pre-Machine sets is missing, and the Machine has become a character -- and a major one at that -- in this production. I'd characterize this as more slanted towards Wagner's bad dream, if not his nightmare.
