First the positive report -- The theater (AMC 25 Empire; 42nd Street, NYC) was comfortable and the
staff gave outstanding customer service. The opera was terrific. In fact it was the best performance of Parsifal I have ever seen.
Now some less than positive -- One of the two elevators was out of order; none of the up escalators were working. It was chaos to attempt to get to the 5th floor where Parsifal was being shown. At the end, one down escalator was working for one floor but not the next; people (quite elderly) were walking down the stairs. There was no crowd control at the bottom of the working escalators and there nearly was a calamity when people continued to attempt to get off the escalator only to find themselves bumping into those who just got off.
The ending of Die Walkurie is one of the great endings in Opera. Unfortunately, those of us who
were in the movie theater last night never saw it. At 11:59 p.m., the screen showing the opera went blank and a technical screen showing "Delete, start over, DishTV, etc. appeared. The audience was confused and angry. Cries of "get back the opera" were ignored. And when dozens of patrons went looking for a manager, all they could find were two porters who "knew nothing about nothing."
This is a disgrace and FANDANGO should offer those patrons who missed this great ending of one of the greatest operas, a refund or at least tickets for another Met HD production.
Although I thought The History Boys to be a better play, I absolutely enjoyed this performance. The
acting was superb.
This was my first time attending a NTlive presentation, it certainly won't be my last. The price is good, the theater comfortable and an all around pleasant experience.
