I thought this movie was done very skillfully. The theme is a much lighter tone than its sequel
trilogy (sequetrilogy?) as it is in the book. I followed the book in my mind while watching the movie and found it very accurate. The places that they deferred from the original story line I thought were masterfully done (Spolier*** showing the white council, and giving gandalphs lines to bilbo with the trolls, and using the orcs with the wargs instead of just the wargs). The rock giants were far beyond anything I imagined, and the battle scenes were certainly not as epic as LOTR but still thrilling. It really makes you get the tone of the Hobbit literature at how fast everything comes at you.
Martin Freeman is the PERFECT Bilbo. Hilarious. The one thing I was scared of was "Riddles in the Dark" and giving Gollum to prominent of a role. All I will say about that is the scene was outstanding, dark, hilarious, and nothing I expected.
Any fan of Tolkiens work should appreciate this
