I've slept on it now, hoping that the feeling would go away, but it hasn't. I have to say for making this a 2 part movie with a sort of bridge as the third, the first is setting up the board. It feels more like a series of inside jokes that allude to moments in the book. Almost like Jackson was taking highlights he liked, and putting in parts to connect them and calling it a script. This feels almost akin to Phantom Menace, there doesn't feel like there is a solid villain or obstacle that is overcome. The only obstacle that seems to exist, have a climax and closing is Bilbo's part in it all, doubted by Thorin for most of the film. This feels almost like Days of our Lives Tolkien edition. That said, I'm sure my opinion will change when we have all of the story instead of half of it. When I maintain the focus that this is a 3 hour introduction and the juicy part is yet to come, I can enjoy it.
