It explores the darker side of being a cop, which is generally predictable: trouble with
relationships, aggression, thrill-seeking behavior. You're told from the beginning who done it, so you constantly look to his behavior to find the clues as to why. But nothing is ever as it seems. Good acting, powerful cast, blah with the cinematography (seriously, how dank did NY look?), interesting plot. The characters were fatally flawed, which is always nice. And the ending wasn't a sappy melodrama. It was gritty, so expect to leave the theater feeling like you need a bath.
It's one of the better and a tad more realistic Tyler Perry movies I've seen. At least in this movie
he didn't create a world in a vacuum of black folks without any other colors (I'm black and even I have a lot of white friends). The major criticism I have with Perry movies is identifying with the characters. Yes, I laugh and cry during the movie, but I always feel like I am watching them, not becoming a part of the movie. I've had people tell me that they feel like part of the family watching a Tyler Perry movie. I never feel that. For example, the character of Kathy Bates. Just as I start to see her MO and start to empathize, her character takes an abrupt turn. And there are one too many fights in the diner. I don't know about you, but my proud black mother would have dragged all of her adult children into a back room before airing any of the family's dirty laundry. Overall, it's an entertaining movie w/ a simple message that won't leave you with a heavy heart.
