The genius of the film is the direction. Affleck allows the story to be the star, and the audience reaps the reward for that decision. For those of us who lived through those times, we were transformed back through authentic and detailed set direction. Even knowing how it ended, I was at the edge of my seat til the end. Well done. Sometimes I think critics mark certain movies as brilliant, Oscar contenders because they think they would look foolish if they don't go with the pack. The Master certainly had potential to be a thriller, a comedy, love story, or just a commentary on cults..but it missed the mark on it all. I left the theater confused about what the films objective was. If it was just to showcase great actors and direction, that was achieved...an all star group who carried their lines and characters with skill. The problem was that though they owned their roles...there was no place to take them...no culmination, no finality. Everyone was adrift and when the credits appeared, so was I. ...(read more)
