The film is dour, insipid, and mostly boring. The film does a terrible job of bringing the novel to life -- mostly just sucks the life out of it actually. Matthew Goode seems to have been cast largely to remind one of Jeremy Irons in the earlier TV-miniseries adaptation of the novel, but unlike Irons, his performance leave one wondering what either Sebastian or Julia find of interest in him. Indeed, in every which way, the TV version is better, but at 10 hours long, just read the bloddy book! The novel, I need hardly add, is enjoyable abeit one of Waugh's worst efforts. Ben Whishaw as Sebastian Flyte is all camp and circumstance, exuding NONE of the charm of Anthony Andrews in the TV version, much less any of the charm of the actual character The best performances -- and they are really good -- are Emma Thompson as Lady Marchmain (maybe tex minutes of screentime), Michael Gambon as Lord Marchmain (maybe 5 minutes of screentime), and Hayley Atwell as Julia Flyte; in that order. ...(read more)
