While the production is very good, and most of the singing was first-rate (I was disappointed with
the man cast as the Count), the production was not perfect, and I think it had to do with the way Ms. Fleming was directed and with her character. I especially did not like all the lolling around on the foot stool in the final scene, and the hands being used excessively around the head during that scene. It all seemed to make Madeleine more trivial than she should be, and made me dislike the character when one should be made sympathetic with the character for the opera to be effective, I think. In the end, I remember thinking that I wished that I had seen Madeleine portrayed more like Ms. Fleming's marvelous Marschallin of last season.
