Toshiro Mifune is my all time favorite Japanese actor. I LOVE old Kurosawa Akira movies and this is
a great one; known as "Akahige" in Japanese. It's quite long and a bit slow so you really have to be one who appreciates a great story. There is something like three mini stories within the movie, all of which add a very interesting aspect to the story. I particularly like the sociological and cultural comparisons between pre-war Japan and America.
This movie clearly takes place during the latter years of the Edo (Tokugawa)i Period since they are serving the shogunate, a title which ceased to exist after 1868 when the Meiji Period began. This is my favorite period for Japanese films and I love Toshiro. His crazy roles are the best, such as in "Rashomon" and "Seven Samurai."
If you enjoy old black and white movies, and like Japanese culture, then this is certainly a masterpiece not to be missed.
