We only got to see Rent late in its run, with our 13-year-old daughter, who became an immediate
Rent-head, so of course, we all now know all the music by heart, and own the movie on DVD. It was great to see the stage version again. However, I found all the quick cuts and super close-ups very distracting, and for me, those cinematic edits took away from seeing the stage tableau--in a live production, the staging is as important as seeing the interactions between 2 characters, and I felt the director sacrificed that larger viewpoint in favor of too-frequent tight close-ups. There were a few numbers w great "staginess": Seasons of Love, La Vie Boheme and the Finale.
My complaints about the direction aside, the acting was fabulous, and I loved watching the faces of the actors as they were both playing their roles and aware that this was their final perfomance (these were times I did appreciate the close-ups). Do see it on the big screen while you can!
