This was an excellent film. Leonardo Di Caprio was inappropriately snubbed and definitely should
have been nominated for his role in this film. Having also seen "The Reader", I would say that Kate Winslet gave two extraordinary performances, but I feel the award should have gone for her role in "Revolutionary Road". Some might be uncomfortable with the seriousness of the subject matter and find it dark, but the raw emotion in the film was riveting, and the film addressed an issue that has been prevalent throughout time. This is a movie that makes you think about life's purpose. I did not find it depressing. I found it thought provoking. The acting by Di Caprio and Winslet was perfection, as were the supporting roles by the 3 neighbors, who added humor. The "lunatic" was refreshing, reminding us how unabashedly truthful and humorous the mentally ill can be. They many times understand clearly what we do not see or are afraid to speak.
