This stunning restoration of Fellini's film brings out every nuance of the black and white
cinematography. And now you're able to see Fellini's humor in the film -- it's not what Pauline Kael described as a "Come Dressed as the Sick Soul of Europe" film; it's a satire on different aspects of Roman society in the early 60s. And Marcello Mastroianni's performance just gets better over time.
Carlos is smart and entertaining; it moves quickly like a thriller, but, at the same time, it
offers a complex portrait of Carlos and the times in which he operated. Olivier Assayas at his best and a remarkable performance by Edgar Ramirez in the title role.
The film holds up beautifully. The opening shot of Alex's face as the camera moves back is still
amazing and Malcolm McDowell's star presence makes him seem like a rock star. One of the few Kubrick films where you're invited to identify with the main character, but Kubrick does this to put you through all that Alex goes through, including the Ludovico treatment.
