Badly written, badly acted, badly cast, badly conceived. A very terrible movie with one good action
sequence. THere were more scenes set up that simply ended without furthering the plot or advancing the drama than in any movie I can remember. Just bad.
Mamet is a quirky writer and director who has put together some wonderful movies (House of Games,
for one). But the astonishly contrived plot and extreme lack of sense of any kind made the movie almost impossible to watch. JuJitsu which is meant to be the heart of the movie is replaced with elaborate and contrived dliemas which carry no weight. The ending is absurd, the hero, nicely acted, is given almost nothing to say (which for the most part is powerful since that's his character) at the most critical point in the movie. SPOILER ALERT: A cop commits suicide because he pawns a watch that he doesn't know is hot? Our hero's wife betrays him, his dojo and his friends to real criminals because she wants him to make more money? A movie star and his wife and family use extreme manipulation and deception on a man who saved his life and whom he likes. The movie is a mess. Terrible.
