I rarely feel that I have to see a movie in a theater, when I can wait a few weeks to buy it as
a pre-release through Columbia House. However, The Devil's Double was an exception. The press have been very positive, the trailers are great and there is even buzz that it will steal the show when Oscar time rolls around.
All that said, I unfortunately left the theater feeling somehow disappointed. The acting by Dominic Cooper was Oscar quality. I'd say his acting made seeing the movie a rare opportunity to see what his trade is all about. The rest of the crew excelled as well, but their performances were not at Dominic's level.
Just guessing, I believe what was missing was a needed director's magic. Perhaps too, the script was not strong enough and tightly woven. OK, keep Dominic and recast all of the rest of the actors, the director and the script writer...and what you have left to savour is a one-man show!
Go see it, but don't get yourself all worked-up like I did.
