...and who doesn't?! This is an excellent film made of a great show, updated slightly for the 21st
century. The voices are sensational -- when do you ever get to pay only $18 to see the mega-stars of Broadway perform a show? This one isn't as dark as many of Sondheim's other musicals, so it's more accessible. But it still manages his usual wit and occasionally cynical view of modern life. Neil Patrick Harris, Patty Lupone, Martha Plimpton, and many others give stellar performances. And I personally had no idea that Stephen Colbert could sing! Life is full of surprises. Making a film of this event was a great idea. It would be wonderful to have films done of more Broadway shows, perhaps when they go off Broadway and travel. There's nothing like live theater, but there's also nothing like seeing a wonderful show at a pittance of the cost of the live performance.
My 11 year old son and I saw this two days ago and loved it! Heartwarming, at times hilarious, just
great fun! It tells the story of two foster kids (brother and sister) who are coping with a bad situation (horrific foster parents) and trying to keep the remains of their family together -- including their little dog Friday whom they keep against their foster parents' knowledge. Friday finds a place for himself at an abandoned hotel where two other dogs are already living. Soon the kids are discovered by 3 other kids who all pitch in to help, and the 5 begin rescuing hurt and abandoned dogs of all shapes and sizes. Without getting sappy, the movie shows the parallels between these unwanted kids and the unwanted dogs, and how the social systems meant to protect them often fall short. Don't want to give away the ending, so I won't, but there's a ray of hope... Lots of fun, with amazing actors -- human and canine! My son's sceptical 12 year old friend even liked it a lot!
