Why did we have to wait so long for this enthralling opera? Anna Bolena is one of those bel canto
Donizetti operas that are rarely performed in the U.S. I knew about it only from the old (and brilliant) Joan Sutherland LP's. Forget about historical authenticity here. Like a variation on a theme, Donizetti and his librettist concentrate on the explosive emotional ties between Anna and her lovers, would-be lovers, and friends. Not to mention Henry, who is at the center of the plot.
Seeing this in HD close-ups was ideal, since each of the singers is also a consummate actor.
All the principles were outstanding, Three were Russian, which had a special significance in that the Met was broadcasting its HD operas to Russia for the first time. The set was both impressivel and versatile. It s monumental grey walls reinforced the theme of Anna's entrapment within a merciless court society. A must-see in theaters as a Met encore presentation.
Capriccio was Richard Strauss's final opera. It is a delightful exercise in meta commentary on the
act of writing an opera aboiut writing an opera. It sparkles. It is very funny. It has gorgeous music and great singers. IT HAS RENEE FLEMING (enough said). I kept wanting to move into the set. And wear her gowns. It is unfair for one woman to be so beautiful ane so talented. I hope she goes on to sing for years more. Acquire this HD performance when it comes out in CD.
