Although I was skeptical of Peter Jackson's ambitions when I heard he was releasing "The Hobbit" in three installments, like "The Lord of the Rings"( mainly because I didn't think Tolkien's book warranted such epic treatment ), having seen "An Unexpected Journey," I have been won over by Jackson's vision once again. Incorporating additional material that Tolkien created as an intended, but aborted, rewrite of "The Hobbit" that ended up as appendices to "The Lord of the Rings," Jackson appears to be fashioning what promises to be a successful, full-fledged prequel , evidenced by much foreshadowing--particularly with references to Sauron and "a mysterious growing threat"; and, of course, the appearance of Gollum{ brilliantly realized, once more, by Andy Serkis }.There are also welcome appearances by Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, and the stunning Cate Blanchett-- all reprising their roles from the "Rings."
