There are some peculiar compressions of the storyline, but those included are very true to the book.
And Lawrence really shines as Katniss. Harrelson seemed miscast - in fact, most of the outside talent (Kravitz) included seemed fairly wooden. This might be a directorial miscue. The action portions inside the Games work far better. The handheld camera decision was also a bad one - imagine it on an IMAX screen. Still, well-composed shots establishing the whole of the Games world would have been far more effective than POV hand-helds.
But, overall, the performance from Lawrence and the delivery of the sections of the story that they chose to tell wins out over the weakness. It's not a great film, but it's quite good. Those that have not read the story may scratch their heads at times, and those that have read may do so too. But ultimately, the movie rewards the reader.
AMC showcase is great but they need more contests and interaction. It was better on that front last
