I have a long, long list of classic films that I adore, but I have seen very few of them on the
actual big screen as they were intended to be seen. . ."Gone with the Wind", "The Wizard of Oz", etc., but now I can add "Singin' in the Rain" to my list of "have seen on the big screen" films (along with "Casablanca" from earlier this year). This was a cinematic treat. The Technicolor was glorious, Gene Kelly was even more gorgeous and muscular on the giant screen, and Donald O'Connor made me laugh harder than ever. And, of course, Lina Lamont was even more vile than on my 46" TV. And now "The Birds", my favorite Hitchcock flick of all time. By September 19, I will be able to add it to this list, too. Life is good.
Seeing "Casablanca" on the big screen was a lovely experience. As many times as I have watched
this amazing movie, this was my first time viewing it on the big screen, and there is nothing like it. The theater was packed to capacity, and I'm guessing 95% of the people in attendance could recite the movie. In fact, quite a number did throughout the course of the film. And while I appreciated Robert Osborne's introduction, I think it was just a bit long. I think many of us knew most of the back story he provided anyway. Still, it was a terrific evening, even if I did have to drive the 60 miles home in a driving snow storm. . .in late March in the Pacific Northwest!
