I saw "Swing Vote" on its opening day last week (Friday). Loaded with a strong cast and a plot that
had real comedic potential. Unfortunately, as is the trend with most "comedies" these days, the writers or directors for some reason feel the need to take the stories toward the serious. It's a comedy! It's alright if you don't make some noble point during a comedy! (I couldn't help but notice audience members looking around themselves at the humorous parts that were perhaps controversial in nature as if to be asking themselves, "Should we really be laughing at this?" A sad commentary on our society - that they feel they have to feel guilty about laughing- as whole, I think.)
Anyhow, the movie was very funny for about two-thirds of the way and then it got into the "social responsibility" message.
Overall, I would recommend this movie. National critics were harsh on it, giving it a "C" to "C-". I would go with a solid "B".
