So I went to my local theater to take part in my seventh Big, Loud, Live event. As always, I was
happy with the drum corps crowd in the theater. The amenities were okay, but I was really disappointed that the broadcast was interrupted by weather in Indianapolis. I realize the local theater had nothing to do with this and it was great that the theater manager came in to address the issue (and even brought free popcorn for everyone). The issue was fairly quickly resolved and I was able to watch the remaining corps perform, but missed the last half of the Bluecoats and all of Santa Clara's show respectively. Now, I have to say that this upset me just a little bit as I AM A BLUECOAT alum who was looking forward to watching the corps performance on the big screen. DCI made things right by offering to show those two corps performances (in their entirety) at the end of the show, but I was unable to remain as I had to get home. All-in-all a great experience!
This is the fourth time I've attended the showing of DCI Quarterfinals in the theaters. It was a
great time had by all who attended. The theater was clean and appropriately air conditioned. My only complaint would be having to sit around/near so many band kids who can, at times, take the fun and enjoyment out of the experience simply by behaving like children.
As for the show itself, I was not particularly crazy about this new format that was put in place where we only got to see the top fifteen corps perform. I would have preferred that it had been left as it was the scoring information provided at the end. I marched Bluecoats from the early to mid 1990s and don't get the chance to see them much anymore as I now live on the west coast. It's great to be able to still see and support the organization that I love all the way out in Oregon where I now live and work.
As a former member of a top twelve corps (go Bluecoats!!!) now living in the Pacific Northwest, I
value the experience of being able to visit a local theater to stay connected to the drum corps activity. It's always great to sit together with other fans and enjoy the experience without having to deal with the inconvenience of air travel to and from the finals host city, hotel accommodations, rental car arrangements, tickets for the weeks events, the heat (heat index in Indianapolis on this day was reported to be 105 degrees - no thanks!!!), traffic getting into and out of the stadium, etc. With Fandango, I was able to simply purchase my tickets, arrive at the theater, pick a seat, sit back, relax and enjoy the show in a cool, dark, air conditioned climate without all the aforementioned drama. Thanks Fandango for giving me my drum corps fix for 2010. Looking forward to it again next year!!!
