I predict an Oscar nod for Jack Black for this movie. You have never seen Jack in a role like this and he plays it brilliantly. I went to see this with my parents, who are not Jack fans, but who also loved it. If you've ever lived in Texas, you will especially appreciate the local humor in this film. This is one of those movies where people are laughing so much that you miss part of the dialogue. It's a dark comedy, but Bernie's humanity makes it poignant at the same time. Like most of the female fans of the book, I was anxious to see The Help on the big screen on opening weekend, though movie adaptations are often disappointing. The Good: The Help closely follows the book and attempts to include every storyline. The brightest performance in the movie is that of Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays Hilly Holbrook to perfection. I would loved to have seen a lot more of Leslie Jordan, who is priceless in his brief scene as the newspaper editor. The locations and art direction were both beautiful. The So-So: My favorite character, Minny, was played much more understatedly than how I read her in the book. I was expecting a reincarnation of Oprah Winfrey's "Miss Sophia" from The Color Purple. The two parts of the story they jacked with were the primary mystery (the disappearance of Constantine) and the ending, for reasons I cannot guess. The pacing of the movie overall seemed a little too slow. Conclusion: it was still fun to see the book come to life. ...(read more)
