Brilliant cast, beautifully filmed and scored and a well balanced script with just the right amount of humor and pathos. Sentimentality is kept to a minimum, although a movie with retirees cast adrift into an exotic locale cannot escape a bit of emotional excess. Maggie Smith's character begins as a cliché, evolves into a more well rounded characterization and finishes with some good moments. But it is Judi Dench at the center with beautifully constructed voiceover readings of her blogs that provide transitions from scene to scene, storyline to storyline. A must see for anyone over 50...and for those of any age looking for an alternative to bingo games and tee times as aspirations for retirement. ...(read more)
Streep is amazing as always...but the screenplay was a frustrating mix of shallow retelling of Thatcher's life, infuriating flashbacks that occupied far too much of the narrative and scenes of Thatcher driving or being driven. A much better screenplay would have spent more time digging into her childhood and her relationship with her son, who is never even seen! Go for the acting (Broadbent is good as always), but don't expect to be moved by the story. ...(read more)
