Termed a "pastiche" of well-known and not so well-known baroque arias and choruses fit into the
Shakespearean plots of The Tempest and Midsummer Night's Dream, last Saturday's matinee performance at nationwide local theaters was a great success, combining great music, operatic drama and wonderful soloists of great renown with a majestic chorus and orchestra.Outstanding were Placido Domingo in two resounding arias. Two counter-tenors singing tender love songs brought these voices to unaccustomed roles in grand opera and the contraltos brought richness to their roles, as well as a youjng bass voice.
This production shown for the Met's Sat. matine and Live HD in local theaters, is simply staged and
produced in its origiinal 18th C. setting, and the music and seven international artists were wonderful, even stunning. One of the best introductions to this grand but comic opera by Mozart that one could ever have. I recommend it highly.
