I did not expect DiCaprio to do such a great job of acting as he did in this movie. The makeup
was outstanding that took him from a 24 year old to a seventy plus year old . What a conflicted man was J. Edgar! He was gay and could not come to terms with it. His mother made it clear to him that she did not want a "sissy" for a child. He worshiped his mother and could not find a way to pull together that love, his love for his male assistant, his love of the FBI and his love (or loathing?) for himself. The movie is truly a study of a personality defect. Driven by his mother, his own ego and a sense that he would and could by himself save the US from all the radical threats, Hoover set about to undermine the very rights and freedoms he thought he was protecting.
This is a movie that you will remember and think about when you are out walking or by yourself and wondering about today's politics and what motivates our congressmen and leaders. Scarey.
